Is Flossing Your Teeth Really Necessary?

Flossing your teeth regularly is just as important as brushing it. Dentists recommend to floss before or after brushing because brushing your teeth may not be enough to remove food residue or prevent plaque and cavity buildup. If you keep tossing aside the flossing then this is your cue to keep it a part of your regular dental care routine.

There is a big dispute on this, to floss or not to floss? Is it really worth it?

“Food that’s left between teeth causes gum inflammation and tooth decay. Flossing is the only way to remove it. A toothbrush just can’t get between teeth,” according to dentistry professor Sivan Finkel, DMD, of New York University College of Dentistry.

 Flossing and its Health Connection

It is a fact that about half of all Americans have gum disease, also known as periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease that shows up when bacteria in plaque below the gum line have started to cause swelling and irritation. If untreated, it can lead to receding gums and tooth loss.

Why Flossing Is Important?

Flossing can help protect your pearly whites and gums from developing tartar and cavities. Your teeth have hard-to-reach areas on the sides which may not be cleaned properly by brushing your teeth alone. When you don’t floss, the food particles can get stuck in the gaps of your teeth which may result in plaque buildup.  The bacteria can also damage the enamel of your teeth and can even cause gingivitis or inflammation of the gums.
Flossing your teeth once a day after a thorough brushing is recommended by dentists.
