Can The Bacteria That Cause Gum Disease Also Cause Alzheimer’s Disease?

NIA scientists have just discovered that the same bacteria that cause gum disease are one and the same culprit for dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The bacteria is said to lead to mouth and dental infection that can cause inflammation and bleeding in the teeth and gums. The danger here lies in the fact that bacteria found in the gums can travel straight to your brain and wreak havoc in your central nervous system.

Recent CDC studies discovered that older adults or seniors with gum disease are more likely to suffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Antibodies against clusters of bacteria such as the oral bacterium P. gingivalis is found which is said to have increased the risk of patients in contracting Alzheimer’s disease. Associations with the degenerative disease have been found which may help in the future treatment or prevention of Alzheimer’s disease.
